The Maritime Centre for African Dance (MCAD), formed in 2005, is an organization dedicated to teaching, sharing and promoting African Culture though the art of dance, to youth and adults across Nova Scotia and Canada. To date, MCAD has taught well over 100,0000 children and adults in schools, community centres, camps and programs. This number is ever increasing. This organization was formed out of a necessity for lack of cultural representation in the form of african traditional dance in Canada. It is a collective of different individuals from Africa who have are trained in traditional dance and ranges from the South, North, West and East of Africa. To date, MCAD`s Fara Dance troupe has performed for various prestigous events including the African Inaugural Ball held in Washington DC for President Obama.

Every year, MCAD holds Afro Dance Camps, (trademarked) for children/youth ages 8-Adults, which features cultural dance from areas such as Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia and South Africa to learning to play traditional instruments such as Marimba, (xylophone), jembe (drum), and mbira (thumb piano). ANYONE of any background, with or without dance experience is encouraged to come to this camp.


The main goals of the Camps are:

  • To increase cultural awareness around Canada and the world
  • To share in the culture and celebration of cultural dance

WOMEN’S DIKITA (INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL FORWOMEN) FESTIVAL FOR WOMEN HELD IN LATE AUGUST. FEATURES DIFFERENT DANCE WORKSHOPS AND AFRICAN DINNER AND DANCE
FULL DAY WORKSHOPS  10-4PM WITH LIVE PERFORMANCE AT THE END OF THE CAMP
HALF DAY WORKSHOPS 1-4PM WITH LIVE PERFORMANCE AT  THE END OF THE WORKSHOP

WEEK LONG CAMPS:

 

The campsites are all across Canada. Ultimately both the town and the surrounding areas are introduced to the rich culture of Africa with the Live Show at the end of the week, featuring the participants and musicians.

The Afro Dance Camp is a MOVING camp, and we move to different locations throughout Canada. In 2010, the camps will be held in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Kitchner, Ontario and Kelowna, BC. The Afro Dance Week Long Camps are held in the summers. All individuals from across Caanda are encouraged to apply. Scholarships are available.There are always Camp Leaders and Assistant Camp Leaders. Assistant Camp Leaders are chosen from those who attend the camp and have to be over the age of 14. After two years, assistant Camp Leaders can apply to be Camp Leaders. Recently our week long camps have expanded to Ontario and British Columbia. TAXIS RIVER CAMP,MUSQUODOBIT CAMP,KITCHENER AND KELOWNA:

 

This year’s camps will feature different new workshops such as Gumboot Dance and its history/beginnings in South Africa, Evolution of Gumboot dance into Stomp, and learning a study in African oral traditions expressed in Drama and writings. The camp focuses on individuals between the ages of 8 and 21. The camp is FOR ANYONE looking to learn African culture, traditions, drum, dance, mbira and much more! LOTS of fun including swimming, African games and treasure hunts!

The cost for the camp will vary according to location but includes transportation, accommodation and food. Scholarships are however, available.

DIKITA WOMEN’S FESTIVAL - OCTOBER 2010:

 
This is an International festival for women from different areas within and outside of Canada. This festival is for ALL women of ANY background. No dance experience is required. FULL DAY WORKSHOPS:

 
Full Day Workshops are for ALL ages. ANYONE without dance experience can attend, as they are at an introductory level. The forms of dance progress as the day goes on. There are breaks in between with 2 workshops going on every hour and a half. Attendees experience the extreme diversity of Africa. Workshops also offered to dance schools. HALF DAY WORKSHOPS AND HOUR AND A HALF LONG WORKSHOPS:
